Frequently Asked Questions

Participants learn the basic concepts of the discipline of archery or BB rifles, including terminology and specific safety principles associated with this activity from experienced, trained, and certified adult instructors. These programs teach life skills like safety, responsibility, personal discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship while developing technical skills and in-depth knowledge.

Due to the nature of shooting sports, a parent or guardian is required to stay at each practice with their student(s). Our program requires a lot of set up and cleanup and we welcome your help!

The 4-H office supplies all equipment for the first session of class, then most equipment in subsequent sessions. Students may need to purchase more personal equipment, which is noted in each discipline’s respective tab. Please speak with our shooting sports educator BEFORE you purchase any equipment for your student as not all equipment is allowed in our 4-H program.

Students may bring their own equipment, but their equipment MUST be one of the bows or rifles listed in the tab for each discipline. PLEASE REVIEW the requirements for any equipment you want to use for your student in the “Rules and Requirements” section in the tabs above.

Each session is composed of class-based learning, experiential engagement, and healthy competition. Most of the class time is spent on the range, but there is also time spent discussing relevant shooting sports-related content.

Each session can vary in length depending on the engagement level of the student. Typically, a class will be scheduled for 1.5 hours.
