Forms & Instructions

Soil mounds

The Extension office has tools available for checkout to help with sampling and testing needs. Most items are free of charge to use. Complete the request form and wait for Extension personnel to contact about pickup. Items include: Hay Corer, Soil Sampler, Hay Moisture Tester, Soil Core Sampler.

Our site visits are $20 and handled by the experts on our Diagnostic Team. If you are interested in a visit, please submit a request at the bottom of this page through the “Contact Us” form. We will get you scheduled. Payment can be processed through the button below.

  • How do I submit a sample?
    • You can come by our office during normal business hours (7:30am – 4:30pm Monday through Friday) and one of our staff will be happy to take your sample and box it up for you.
  • What if it’s after normal business hours?
    • We have a metal cart and a drop box outside of our front door where you can drop off your sample. There are forms and boxes on the cart for you to use. Make sure that you fill out the forms completely and leave any payments/forms in the drop box.
  • How do I pay for my sample analysis?
    • We offer online payment for all samples. You can find the payment link below.
    • We also accept exact cash and checks.
    • You can make your checks payable to: Williamson County Extension
  • Can I test my potting mix/compost?
    • Yes, you can have your potting mix tested, but it is an additional cost.
    • The cost per sample is $35 and you can find the form here.
  • Can I have my soil tested for chemicals or contaminants?
    • No. Our lab does not test for toxins, chemicals, or contaminants in the soil.
  • Can I bring a wet soil sample?
    • It is preferable that the soil be dry before boxing up. If you can, spread out your soil on newspaper and let it dry overnight before bringing it in.
  • How long do I have to wait for results?
    • The response time on sample analysis varies, but you should typically hear back within 1-2 weeks. If you have not heard back by then please let us know and we can contact the lab.

Training & Resources

UT Pesticide Logo

There is an $80 fee for Private Applicator training, both in-person and online. Training can occur anytime throughout the year. Registration required to Shannon Rhudy at srhudy@utk.edu

Certification Period

Pesticide certification runs in a three-year cycle. No matter what date you complete your training, your certification will expire on June 30, 2023.

Recertification

Private applicator recertification begins January 1, 2023 and ends on June 30, 2023. You must complete the recertification process during this time frame to roll your certification into the new certification cycle which begins on July 1, 2023 and ends June 30, 2026. The cost is $30.
